Overview

Datura, a genus of nine highly poisonous, vespertine-flowering plants, belongs to the nightshade family, known as thornapples or jimsonweeds, and devil’s trumpets.
According to Vamana Purana, Datura emerged from Lord Shiva’s chest when he consumed poison.
Datura is toxic and bitter. Its fruit or flower symbolizes surrender and the release of bitterness, negativities, and toxicity like hate, jealousy, and anger.

Native to Asia and Mexico, it is found in disturbed areas, along roadsides, old fields, pastures, wastelands, and as a garden weed .
A perennial shrub with terete, glabrous stems.
Leaves are broadly triangular-ovate, truncate at the base, unequal-sided, entire or irregularly dentate, covered with a fine mealy pubescence or glabrous on both sides.
Flowers are showy, often double or triple, with one corolla issuing from another.

Bioactive components in Datura include Daturine, Daturadiol, Hyoscine, Atropine, Noratropine, Fastudine, Allantoin, Hypocyamine, Norhyosciamine, Tropane, Meteolodine, Scopolamine, Mucilage, Albumen, Vitamin C, Niacin, and Malic Acids.
Phytochemical substances include alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, and phenols.
Amino acids such as alanine, phenylalanine, glutamate, and tyrosine are isolated from the seeds.
