Overview

  • Also known as Lakshmana in Sanskrit and Thiruthali in Malayalam, this plant has two flower varieties: light yellow and light purple.
  • Thiruthali is a member of Dasapushpam, a group of ten culturally and medicinally significant herbs in ayurveda.
  • A small climber, it thrives near marshy or wet areas, protecting from toxicities, notably arsenic, much like the legendary Lakshmana protected Sri Rama.

Habitat

  • The Ipomoea obscura or the obscure morning glory, is an invasive species native to parts of Africa, Asia, and certain Pacific Islands.
  • Found in disturbed areas, cultivated fields, natural grasslands, shrublands, coastal areas, savannas, forest edges, and open fields, it can be found from sea level to 1800 m.
