Overview

Also known as Lakshmana in Sanskrit and Thiruthali in Malayalam, this plant has two flower varieties: light yellow and light purple.
Thiruthali is a member of Dasapushpam, a group of ten culturally and medicinally significant herbs in ayurveda.
A small climber, it thrives near marshy or wet areas, protecting from toxicities, notably arsenic, much like the legendary Lakshmana protected Sri Rama.

The Ipomoea obscura or the obscure morning glory, is an invasive species native to parts of Africa, Asia, and certain Pacific Islands.
Found in disturbed areas, cultivated fields, natural grasslands, shrublands, coastal areas, savannas, forest edges, and open fields, it can be found from sea level to 1800 m.

Phytochemical analysis reveals high content of alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids.
Contains a wide array of bioactive chemical constituents such as alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, flavonoids, phenolics, saponins, quinones, tannins, terpenoids, proteins amino acids etc.
Major compounds include 7-hydroxy-6-methoxychromen-2-one (scopoletin) and 7-hydroxychromen-2-one (umbelliferone).

Thiruthali is a trusted antidote to arsenic is known for its uterine tonic, aphrodisiac, and diuretic properties.
Used in the treatment of constipation, burning sensation, strangury, general debility, diabetes, and infertility in women.
Effective against pest poisons, insect and animal bites, and viper bites.
The plant was likely included in Dasapushpam to counter dissolved arsenic and other pollutants in monsoon waters and address the rise in the number of rats and other pests during the season.
Thiruthali means the sacred ornament of the gods, endowed with magical purifying powers.
Ipomoea Obscura is used to treat infertility in women, and its dried leaves, as an extract, provide antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties
This extract inhibits the growth and proliferation of tumor cells.
