  • Ixora is a genus of flowering plants in the Rubiaceae family and is a showy relative of coffee. The plants feature leathery leaves, ranging from 3 to 6 inches in length, and produce large clusters of tiny flowers.
  •  In tropical climates, they bloom year-round and are commonly used in Hindu worship, as well as in Ayurveda and Indian folk medicine.
  • The scarlet, tubular flowers grow in dense rounded clusters and can bloom year-round in the right conditions.

Habitat

  • This low-growing tropical shrub, thrives in areas with medium annual rainfall and well-drained soils. It features brightly colored flowers composed of small blooms massed into dense, flat-topped flower heads. The plant prefers full sun in moist, well-drained, acidic soils and grows in a bushy, rounded form with glossy, dark evergreen leaves.
  • Ixora coccinea is commonly propagated by cuttings, featuring a branched taproot system. Flowering and fruiting occur throughout the year, with a distribution in India’s Western Peninsula and Sri Lanka.

  • The plant offers edible fruit and hard, durable wood suitable for tool handles. The root is stomachic, sedative, astringent, and antiseptic, used for various ailments, including loss of appetite, hiccup, diarrhea, and dysentery.
  • The flower is utilized in treating dysentery, leukorrhea, dysmenorrhea, haemoptysis, and catarrhal bronchitis. In Ayurveda and folk medicine, the fusion of juice leaves and fruit is used for dysentery, ulcers, and gonorrhea.
  • The roots, said to be analgesic, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, sedative, and stomachic, stimulate gastric secretions and bile, providing relief from abdominal pains. They are externally applied for sores, chronic ulcers, and headaches.
  • A decoction or infusion of the roots clears the urine, and in Thailand, roots or flowers are used as anti-inflammatory and antidiarrheal drugs, , tranquilizers, and appetite stimulants.
  • Flowers having properties similar to the roots but milder, are analgesic, astringent, cholagogue, diuretic, sedative, and stimulate digestive enzyme secretion. They are used in treating blood-shot eyes and employed as a lotion against eye troubles, sores, and ulcers.
  • The plant is occasionally used to treat fevers and possesses antioxidative, antibacterial, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, antidiarrheal, antinociceptive, antimutagenic, antineoplastic, and chemopreventive effects.
