Overview

Chrysopogon zizanioides is an evergreen perennial herb, and its appearance is similar to that of lemongrass. It prevents soil erosion and also helps in rehabilitating metal-polluted soil.
Ancient Ayurvedic treatises, fromed around 1000 BC, attest that the Indians were the first to recognize the aromatic and medicinal properties of vetiver.
Vetiver is used in the centuries-old Sama-Chakeba festival observed for welcoming the migratory birds in Mithila wetlands during the onset of the winter season.
It is worshipped by the women while observing the Ravi-vrata as obeisance to the Sun God.

For a plant that grows so well on hillsides, vetiver’s natural habitat includes low, damp sites such as swamps and bogs.
Originating from Northern India, vetiver grows in well-drained sandy loam and red laterite soils with a pH of 6-8, luxuriantly with 100-200 cm rainfall and a temperature of 30-40°C.

The phytochemical screening tests reveal the saponins, flavanoids, phenols, and steroids were present whereas tannins were absent in the extract.
