Spearmint, also known as garden mint, common mint, lamb mint, and mackerel mint, is a species of mint (Mentha spicata) native to Europe and southern temperate Asia.
Native range extends from Ireland in the west to southern China in the east, with naturalization in other temperate parts of the world, including northern and southern Africa, North America, and South America.
Used as a flavouring in food and herbal teas, its aromatic oil is also used as a scent.
Habitat
Mentha spicata grows in moist places along shorelines and stream banks.
This herb thrives in low elevations as well as in higher elevations in the mountains, often alongside Juncas and Veronicas.
Phytochemistry
Main constituents include menthol (40.7%) and menthone (23.4%).
Other components are (+/-)-menthyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, limonene, beta-pinene and beta-caryophyllene.
Leaves containing carvone (49.62–76.65%), limonene (9.57–22.3%), and 1,8-cineole (1.32–2.62%)as the main components.
