About Image

Overview

  • Desmodium gangeticums is a small shrub that grows up to 2–4 feet tall.
  • The main pollinators are bees, and the plant is often grazed by cattle, aiding in seed dispersal. The seeds spread through small hairs on the seedpods that readily cling to human skin, clothing, and other animals’ fur and feathers.
  • This ensures maximum seed dispersal, making the plant considered an invasive weed in some habitats. This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria, forming nodules on the roots to fix atmospheric nitrogen. Flowering and fruiting take place from October to February after the first few showers.

Habitat

  • Desmodium gangeticum is found in places with partial shade or in the open, and very rarely in deep shade. It is native to tropical Africa, Asia, and Northern Australia, typically in anthropogenic biomes. It thrives in lowlands, growing best in dry conditions with clayey loam soils that are alkaline and moderately calcareous.

  • Phytochemical research on Desmodium gangeticum has led to the isolation of alkaloids, pterocarpans, phospholipids, sterols, flavones, and flavonoid glycosides.
  • Loaded with bioactive compounds, including N-dimethyltryltryptamine, Hypaphorine, Hordenine, Caudicin, Gangetin-3H, Gangetinin, and Desmodin, these compounds are known for their health-benefiting properties.
