Overview

Catharanthus roseus, commonly known as Periwinkle and Nithyakalyani in Tamil, is a globally distributed ornamental shrub.
Rich in source of alkaloids, it contributes significantly to health care with antibacterial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, and antiviral properties.
Notable in cancer treatment; vincristine, and vinblastine, anti-cancer drugs, were discovered during studies for anti-diabetic properties.
Used historically for health issues such as gastritis, cystitis, enteritis, memory loss, toothache, circulatory disorders, chest complaints, throat infections, nose bleeds, bleeding gums, hemorrhoids, skin diseases like acne, dermatitis, and eczema.
Wound-healing property may be attributed to the phytoconstituents like flavonoids and tri-terpenoids, known for astringent and antimicrobial properties.

Belongs to the Apocynacea family, evergreen Nithyakalyani (Catharanthus roseus) reaches a height of 1-2.5 meters.
Native to Madagascar but now found worldwide.
