In the indigenous system of therapy, specifically Ayurveda, Nilappana constitutes a group of ten potential herbs that hold cultural and medicinal significance to the people of Kerala in India.
They are a set of ten herbs used by ladies to decorate their hair and perform the Thiruvathira Kali dance on the day of Thiruvathira in the Malayalam month of Dhanu.
Nilappana translates as ground palm and is attributed to the looks of the plant with its leaves resembling that of a palm. Spread on he ground, the only visible parts of the plant are the shiny green longish leathery leaves and bright yellow flowers.
Habitat
A stem-less perennial herb, Musali is propagated by the bud and develops from wherever the leaf tip touches the soil. Packed with rejuvenating and aphrodisiac factors by nature.
Musali thrives in moist, humus-rich shady forests of the Western and Eastern Ghats, Lower Himalayas, and other evergreen forests of India, growing up to a height of 1800 meters.
It flourishes in the tropical forests of South and Southeast Asia, with its most medically valuable component being the thick roots that spread horizontally underground, exhibiting a mucilaginous nature.
Phytochemistry
In its dried form, the roots of Musali appear brownish black and wrinkled, containing a medicinally active component, a phenolic glycoside called Curculigoside.

Nilappana, being a bitter appetizer, sedative, anticonvulsive, androgenic, and anti-inflammatory, is useful in the treatment of syphilis, gonorrhea, menstrual problems, piles, jaundice, asthma, and diarrhea. It is also used against the poison of a viper.
