Overview

  • It is one of the Ten Sacred Flowers of Kerala State in India, collectively known as Dasapushpam. This medicinal herb is called ‘ye xia Hong’ in Chinese.
  • Emilia sonchifolia belongs to the Asteraceae family, commonly known as Cupid’s shaving brush. It is an annual herb with weak or erect stems. The flowers are lavender, purple, or pink in colour, and can be found in open fields and wastelands.

Habitat

  • It is widespread in tropical regions globally, native to Asia, and naturalized in Africa, Australia, the Americas, and various oceanic islands.

  • It contains calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, along with vitamins like riboflavin and niacin.
  • It is rich in pyrrolizidine alkaloids.
