Overview

Cyperus rotundus is a sedge species (Cyperaceae) native to Africa, Southern and Central Europe (north to France and Austria), and Southern Asia.
It serves as a staple carbohydrate in tropical regions for hunter-gatherers and is considered a famine food in some agrarian cultures.
In traditional Chinese medicine, C. rotundus is a primary qi-regulating herb.
Mentioned in the ancient Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita, it is used to treat fevers, digestive disorders, dysmenorrhea, and more. Modern alternative medicine recommends it for nausea, inflammation, pain reduction, and various other disorders.
In 500 AD, references to these plants were found in a Chinese medicine book (Nekpi, 1992), and microbial and biomarkers have been discovered in the human dental calculus from the Meroitic pre-Islamic Kingdom in Central Sudan.

Muthanga is composed of chemical constituents such as Cyperene-1, Cyperene-2, β-selinene, Cyperenone, α-cyperone, Rotundome, responsible for therapeutical effects.
