Overview

  • Plumbago indica, also known as Indian leadwort, scarlet leadwort, or whorled plantain, is a flowering plant in the family Plumbaginaceae. It is native to Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Yunnan in Southern China.
  • Koduveli is a traditional herbal remedy in Siddha medicine for rheumatic ailments, an ancient system of medicine originating in South India based on the balance of fundamental  elements in the body.

Habitat

  • A spreading evergreen shrub, growing to 2 m (7 ft) tall and 1 m (3 ft) wide, with oval leaves and racemes of deep pink or scarlet flowers in winter.
  • Cultivated as an ornamental plant, it prefers subtropical or warm-temperate climates, or a greenhouse in cooler climates. Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
