  • Haritaki is a miraculous ayurvedic fruit extensively used in traditional remedies, cultivated from the seeds of the Terminalia chebula tree, also known as Indian walnut or Indian hog plum in English.
  • Kadukkai (Haritaki) is a versatile herb, part of Triphala, renowned in Ayurvedic medicine.  It is known by various names like Haritaki in Hindi, Kadukkai in Tamil, and Inknut in English. Hailed as the “King of Medicine” with diverse health benefits.

Habitat

  • Terminalia chebula is found in southern and southeast Asia including India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Thailand.
  • In China, it is native to western Yunnan and cultivated in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi (Nanning), and Taiwan (Nantou).
  • In India, it thrives in the sub-Himalayan region and forests of northern India, central provinces, Bengal, Chennai, Mysore, and the southern part of the Bombay presidency.
  • Its habitat extends up to 900 m in elevation.

Phytochemistry

  • Kadukkai fruit boasts high tannin content (32% to 34%). Primarily pyrogallol-type tannins, including gallic acid, chebulagic acid, punicalagin, chebulanin, corilagin, neo chebulinic acid, ellagic acid, and casuarinin.
  • Other compounds include polyphenols (corilagin, galloyl glucose, punicalagin, terflavin A, maslinic acid), fatty acids (palmitic, linoleic, oleic), glycosides (chebulosides I and II, arjunin, arjun glucoside), flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, luteolin, isoquercetin), fructose, amino acid, succinic acid, beta-sitosterol, and resin.
