Adalodakam is a large shrub that sometimes reach the size of a small tree. It features lance-shaped leaves and has been used in various Ayurvedic treatments for centuries due to its Kapha and Pitta combating properties.
Habitat
This shrub has 10-20 lance-shaped leaves measuring 8-9 centimeters in length and four centimeters wide.
The leaves are oppositely arranged, smooth-edged, and borne on short petioles.
The trunk exhibits many long opposite ascending branches, with yellowish bark.
The flowers are typically white.
Adalodakam thrives on the plains of India and in the lower Himalayas, up to an elevation of 1000 meters above sea level.
Phytochemistry
Adalodakam leaves are rich sources of two alkaloids – vasicine and vasicinone –prominently used in Ayurvedic remedies. The flowers, roots, and seeds are also employed in the preparation of various medicines.
Nutritional Prowess
Expectorant, diuretic, antispasmodic, and depurative, Adalodakam is beneficial for conditions such as bleeding diarrhea, cough, and asthma.
It effectively removes toxins from the blood, purifying it and is hence used in the treatment of jaundice.
The leaves possess anti-asthmatic, antispasmodic, bronchodilator, and expectorant properties, making them suitable for treating chronic cough, asthma, and bronchitis, and relieving chest congestion.
The juice extracted from the leaves is applied to affected areas to control bleeding and is effective against pyorrhoea.
